Dark and Darker Season 11: Dark Swarm, Unified Matchmaking, Glaive and Every Major Change

Dark and Darker Season 11 (Early Access Season 11) launched with a wipe on October 9, 2026. The Dark Swarm returns, and Solo, Duo and Trio queues now share one matchmaking pool for parties of one to three. In addition, the season adds a new weapon called the Glaive, an Impact Guard system for two-handed weapons, new Warlock and Bard options, Custom Play and the return of the Tavern. However, some outlets use names like Vanquish the Curse and Blood Moon, and the official patch notes do not confirm either one.

  • Launch: October 9, 2026, with a season wipe (build 0.18.154.10178).

What Season 11 changes

IRONMACE calls Season 11 a major turning point. The studio says it wants to return to the dangerous, unpredictable dungeon crawl that first defined the game, and it admits that earlier changes pushed Dark and Darker away from that goal. As a result, several convenience systems from recent seasons are gone.

Here are the headline changes from the official patch notes:

ChangeWhat it does
Dark SwarmReturns to all Normal Campaign and High-Roller dungeons and damages players outside the safe circle every second
Unified matchmakingMerges Solo, Duo and Trio queues into one pool for one to three players and removes Gear Score brackets
Item reworkRemoves primary attributes that rarity used to grant, so random modifiers matter more
Classic mechanicsBrings back Fog of War, traditional treasure chests, solo escape stairs and random dungeon layouts
Dungeon listOffers Normal Campaign, High-Roller and Arena, and removes The Blue Maelstrom
Tavern and Custom PlayAdds a pre-dungeon gathering space and new practice modes

The Dark Swarm and light sources

Dark and Darker Season 11 The Dark Swarm poster showing dungeon adventurers using lanterns and torches to survive the deadly swarm, highlighting light protection, fuel mechanics, and stackable torches.

The Dark Swarm works like a closing circle. Players outside it take damage every second, and the damage grows with each phase. Random escape portals open as the phases advance, and one portal always opens in the phase before the final circle.

Light is your protection. Players near a light source take no Dark Swarm damage, and torches, lanterns, campfires, the Wizard’s Light spell and dungeon torches all count. Because light also puts anyone nearby, enemies included, in the Illuminated state, nobody can hide inside it.

Fuel is the catch. Handheld lights burn fuel while lit and cannot relight once the fuel runs out, but dungeon-placed lights burn fuel only inside the Swarm. During the final phase, handheld lights go out and stay out. Meanwhile, torches now stack one per slot and cost 10 Gold Coins, so carrying spares is cheap.

Unified matchmaking and the new Ante

The single queue means fewer empty lobbies. Parties of one, two or three all enter the same pool, and Gear Score brackets and entry minimums no longer exist.

Instead, the game charges an entry fee called the Ante, based on a Gear Score threshold of 256:

ModeHow the Ante works
Normal CampaignYou pay more the further your equipped and inventory Gear Score rises above 256, up to 10,000 Gold Coins
High-RollerYou pay more the further your equipped Gear Score falls below 256, and entering with no gear costs up to 2,000 Gold Coins

Normal Campaign adds a bounty twist. Anyone who pays an Ante carries a Veteran Adventurer’s License, which puts the full Ante into a bounty pot. If a license holder kills a player whose Gear Score is at least 100 points lower, that victim receives compensation from the pot equal to the value of their lost gear. In addition, the first opposing player to kill a license holder collects what remains.

High-Roller works differently. Players receive a Gambler’s Token based on their Ante, and they can sell it to the Collector to recoup part of the cost. Friendly encounters with other teams are now allowed there, and teaming is no longer a report category.

The Glaive and Impact Guard

Season 11 adds one new weapon, the Glaive. The notes do not list its stats or its attack pattern, so check it in the game before you build around it.

Impact Guard has clearer rules. It applies to every two-handed weapon without a Riposte, and that includes the Bardiche, Battle Axe, Double Axe, Felling Axe, Glaive, Halberd, Quarterstaff, Spear, War Maul, several bows and crossbows, the Hand Cannon and the magic weapons. When you raise your guard with the right timing, your Impact Resistance briefly rises so you guard more firmly. A buff icon at the bottom of the screen shows when it is active.

Melee players also get special attacks on the R key for the Battle Axe, Double Axe, Halberd, War Maul and Zweihander. You can chain them by alternating normal and special attacks, while right-click blocking stays the same.

Warlock and Bard changes

Bard and Warlock receive the new content this season:

ClassNew additionsChanges
BardPerks Ostinato and Cadenza, skills Sing and One-Man Band, songs Sounding Line, Pianissimo and Cleansing CadenceCharismatic Performance forgives one mistake, and Encore replays your last song
WarlockPerks Abyssal Orb and Infernal Usury, skill Summon Demon, spells Abyssal Gateway and Hellguard GlaivePhantomize’s movement speed bonus rises from 5% to 10%

The patch notes give names but no numbers for the new abilities. One outlet says Sounding Line can reveal nearby stealth players, but the official notes do not describe it, so confirm that in the game.

Other classes also change, and several of the biggest moves are nerfs:

ClassNotable change
RogueDual Strike’s cooldown rises from 18 to 22 seconds, and Trickster’s Action Speed bonus falls from 30% to 20%
WizardTeleport drops from 2 charges to 1, Fly from 3 to 2, and Light Orb from 4 to 3
SorcererWindblast and Vortex damage falls to 0, while Air Mastery’s knockback bonus rises to 50%
DruidShapeshifting becomes instant but carries a 50% Magical Damage penalty
BarbarianRage gives more movement speed and Strength but cuts Physical Damage Reduction by 20%
FighterSecond Wind recovers 50% health instead of 40%

Global changes matter too. The flat +25 Health that every class used to get is gone, and the movement speed cap rises from 330 to 500.

Custom Play and the Tavern

The Tavern is back. Players gather there before a dungeon run and depart together, and nobody can take damage until they enter the dungeon.

Custom Play is new, and it has two modes. In Expedition, you can extract items marked Expedition Only for future Expeditions, but those items cannot go to quests or merchants and vanish if you die. In Skirmish, you can test your own gear without risking it, though items you find in the dungeon cannot leave with you. Accounts with Legendary Status can access Custom Play.

Season 11 dates

DateWhat happens
October 9Season 11 launches, and the Twitch Drops campaign begins
October 9 to 23Season 11 SSF event runs for the first two weeks
October 23Marketplace and Trading Post open
October 30Arena Season 4 begins, and Twitch Drops end

I could not confirm the exact time servers came back online. The Season 10 end time was reported as 03:00 UTC on October 9, and that does not tell you when Season 11 servers opened.

Tips and common mistakes

Check your Ante before you queue. The cost depends on Gear Score, so a full bag of expensive gear can raise your Normal Campaign fee quickly.

Carry spare torches. Handheld lights cannot relight after they run dry, and they go out in the final Swarm phase, so plan your last move before that point.

Do not trust a season name. Some outlets call it Vanquish the Curse and mention a Blood Moon event. The official notes use Early Access Season 11 and mention cursed shrines and chests in The Forgotten Castle instead.

Do not expect the Marketplace on day one. It opens October 23, so plan your trading around that date.

Remember the new perk slots. Slot 2 unlocks at level 5, slot 3 at level 10 and slot 4 at level 15.

What could change

IRONMACE says Season 11 is the beginning of a new direction, not the finished result, and it plans to adjust based on feedback. Therefore, balance numbers, Ante values and class changes can shift in later hotfixes. Everything here is accurate as of October 13, 2026, based on the official Season 11 patch notes. Check the official patch notes before you make big gear or class decisions.

Conclusion

Season 11 pushes Dark and Darker back toward a harsher, riskier dungeon crawl. The Dark Swarm and light fuel change how you move, the single queue and Ante change how you gear, and Glaive, Impact Guard, Warlock, Bard, Custom Play and the Tavern add new things to try. Read the Ante rules before your first run, and treat any season name beyond Early Access Season 11 as unconfirmed.
