Dinkum Rare Insects on Great Bite Island Flight Times, Boosted Spawns and Hunter’s Camp Gear

Great Bite is Dinkum’s second airport destination, and the rare bugs and fish for the current in-game season spawn there far more often than at home. The airship flies to Great Bite on even hours and to Island Reef on odd hours, so catch the boarding time for your destination. However, the island has no bug species of its own, so you hunt the same rare bugs you already know, just more often. As of October 13, 2026, the Great Bite update has run on Steam since April 23, and I could not confirm it on Switch or Switch 2.

Summary: Dinkum Rare Insects on Great Bite Island

  • Where: Great Bite, the second airport destination. It alternates with Island Reef every hour, and Great Bite takes the even hours.
  • Rare insects: the current season’s rare bugs and fish appear much more often, but the island adds no new species.
  • Access: Year 2, the Airport Deed, and a Boarding Pass from Nancy on a Saturday (250,000 Dinks, per the wiki).
  • Hunter’s Camp: Ted Selly sets up in a random spot and sells access to the Encyclopedia and Hunter’s Helmet recipes.
  • Comp Bug Net: buy it from Julia on the morning of the Bug Catching Competition, which runs in Spring and Autumn.
  • Platform: Steam update from April 23, 2026. Console availability is unconfirmed.
  • Not confirmed: which bug biomes the island covers and how long each trip lasts.

What Great Bite is and what boosted spawns mean

Dinkum Great Bite Island guide showing the tropical island, high cliffs, boosted rare insect and fish spawns, seasonal variety, and its addition in the version 1.0.8 anniversary update.

Great Bite is an arid island with high cliffs you can climb. It arrived with the 1st Anniversary update (version 1.0.8) on April 23, 2026, and it sits beside Island Reef at the airport.

The official patch notes promise that rare insects and fish for the current season appear much more frequently there. The wiki adds an important detail: Great Bite has no unique bugs or fish. So the boost works on the rarity tags you already know from the main island. In short, you get more chances at the bugs that your current season marks as rare.

That has one practical result. The in-game season decides which rare bugs show up, and a trip in the wrong season will not give you the bug you want. Therefore, check the season before you pay for a flight.

How to get to Great Bite

The airport controls everything, and the wiki lists these steps:

  1. Reach Year 2. The Airport Deed from Fletch unlocks from Year 2 once enough NPCs have moved in. One wiki line says 11 NPCs, and renters count. Another says all NPCs, so confirm in your save.
  2. Take on the town debt. The deed puts the town 2,500,000 Dinks in debt.
  3. Buy a Boarding Pass. Nancy sells it at the airport on a Saturday for 250,000 Dinks.
  4. Board at the right hour. Select Use on the pilot’s door while you hold the pass.

The destination flips every hour, so the departure time matters:

DepartureDestination
4:00 AMGreat Bite (only if you wake early with the Black Pocket Watch)
5:00 AMIsland Reef
6:00 AMGreat Bite
7:00 AMIsland Reef (the normal first flight)
8:00 AMGreat Bite
Every even hour afterGreat Bite
Every odd hour afterIsland Reef

The wiki lists 11 PM as the final departure. By that pattern, the last Great Bite flight leaves at 10 PM. Guides also say the airport runs this alternating schedule on Saturdays, so plan your week around that day.

Which rare bugs to hunt

The wiki’s bug list shows the rarity tags below. It is partial, and I could not confirm that every bug spawns on Great Bite, so check each one in the Encyclopedia once you land.

SeasonRare bugs on the wiki listWhen to look
SpringLadybird, Lacewing, Redback Spider, TrogidMorning, day and night
SummerLacewing, Redback SpiderDay
AutumnFiddler Beetle, Huntsman (Super Rare), Desert Scorpion, Paper Wasp, Redback Spider, TrogidMorning, day and night
WinterFiddler Beetle, Huntsman (Super Rare), Desert ScorpionMorning, day and night
Any seasonCentipede (Very Rare), Harlequin Butterfly, PygmyflyNight, morning and day

Time of day matters too, because night starts at different hours by season: 9 PM in summer, 7 PM in autumn, 6 PM in winter and 8 PM in spring. Night bugs like the Centipede and the Trogid only show up after that point. Meanwhile, morning runs from 7 AM to 11 AM in every season.

Ted Selly’s Hunter’s Camp

Ted Selly camps in a random spot each trip, so explore the cliffs until you hear his whistle. His camp holds the Hunter’s Crafting Table, and the gear there is useful for bug hunters.

ItemRecipeWhat it does
Encyclopedia1 Bug Book, 1 Fish Book, 1 Critter BookWorks as all three books and shows names and prices above creatures you have caught before
Hunter’s Helmet1 Milking Bucket, 2 Berkonium Bars, 5 Iron BarsHas a 1-in-6 chance to block a physical attack

The Encyclopedia needs Year 2 and a built airport. Because it replaces three books in one slot, it frees up space in your toolbar for a net.

The Hunter’s Helmet is the first real armor in the game, according to one guide. Berkonium is the hard part. It rarely spawns on Great Bite, and a gemstone crusher near the airship landing site turns the raw ore into bars.

Where to get the Comp Bug Net

You cannot craft the Comp Bug Net, and you cannot find it at Ted’s camp. Instead, you buy it from Julia on the morning of the Bug Catching Competition. It lasts longer than the normal net and has a wider hit box, and you can buy several.

Julia visits only in Spring and Autumn, and the competition signup opens on the 14th. Ted also accepts either net as an ingredient for his Berley Boxes, so a spare Comp Bug Net has a second use.

Dangers on the island

Great Bite punishes careless trips:

  • Alpha animals. Alpha Sharks swim in the water, and Alpha Crocos, Jackaroos and Bush Devils roam the cliffs.
  • The 11 PM rumble. The island shakes at 11 PM as a warning.
  • Acid rain at midnight. At 12 AM, acid rain covers the whole map and deals 1 damage every 2 seconds. The airship is safe.

Combine those with the night start times above, and your window for night bugs gets short. For example, an autumn trip has only about four hours between the 7 PM night start and the 11 PM warning.

Tips and common mistakes

Check the season first. The boost only helps if the rare bug you want belongs to the current season.

Buy extra Comp Bug Nets on competition day. You cannot get one any other way, and the competition only visits twice a season cycle.

Bring a bug book or the Encyclopedia. It shows names and prices above bugs you have already caught, so you spot repeats quickly.

Do not wait for a unique species. Great Bite adds none, and guides that promise one are guessing.

Do not forget the Saturday pass. Nancy sells the Boarding Pass on Saturdays, so plan your 250,000 Dinks ahead of time.

Leave before 11 PM. The warning rumble is your cue, and midnight brings acid rain.

What could change

The latest Dinkum patch I found is the October 8, 2026 Spooky Event update. The part of its notes I could read did not mention Great Bite changes. Even so, bug spawn tags, recipes and prices can shift in any patch. Everything here is accurate as of October 13, 2026, based on the official patch notes and the community wiki. Check the in-game Encyclopedia and the Steam patch notes for updates.

Conclusion

Great Bite gives you more chances at the rare bugs your current season already offers, and it adds Ted Selly’s camp with the Encyclopedia and Hunter’s Helmet. Buy a Boarding Pass on a Saturday, board on an even hour and leave before the 11 PM rumble. Remember that the Comp Bug Net comes from Julia, not from the island.
