What Brotato: Primal Dread adds

Primal Dread DLC promotional poster featuring a potato warrior battling dinosaurs in a prehistoric jungle, showcasing new maps, characters, weapons, items, pets, game mechanics, and the November 2, 2026 PC release date.

Brotato is the top-down arena shooter where one potato wields up to six weapons and survives timed waves. Primal Dread is its second paid expansion, following Abyssal Terrors in October 2024. The Steam description sends Brotato into a hostile prehistoric jungle full of mutated and cyber-enhanced predators. The feature list covers a new map, characters, weapons, items, game mechanics, music and achievements, and coverage of the reveal also mentions new pets.

What has not been published yet is the roster itself. The sources I checked list categories only, so the names of the new characters, weapons and items are unconfirmed as of October 13, 2026. Any article that hands you a full list right now is guessing.

A note on the name. Steam lists the DLC as Brotato: Primal Dread. A few outlets, including Gematsu, write it as Primal Dead. If you are searching the store, use Dread.

Release date, platforms and price

The date has moved around, so here is the sequence:

StageWhat happened
First announcementRevealed at a Triple-i Initiative showcase with a summer 2026 window
Window passesA July 8 update said only that it was coming later this year
Date confirmedThe October 8 Triple-i showcase set November 2
PC launchMonday, November 2, 2026
Consoles and mobileEarly 2027

On PC, the DLC arrives on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG. A release database also lists Windows, Mac and Linux. I could not find a published launch time, so check your store page on the day.

The early 2027 group is long: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. None of them has a specific date. If you play Brotato on a console or phone, you are waiting a few months longer than PC players.

Price is reported at $3.99, €3.99 or £3.39, the same as Abyssal Terrors. That figure comes from one outlet, and the Steam page copy I could access predates the date announcement, so confirm the price on your store page.

Steam lists very light minimum requirements for the DLC: a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, 128 MB of graphics memory and 200 MB of storage.

How the Evolution stat works

Evolution is the headline mechanic. It is a stat you can push in two directions, and each direction changes both your bonuses and the enemies you fight.

MechaMutation
Your bonusReinforces your weapons and adds statsCopies your items to multiply their effects
Enemy themeMechanical dinosaursMutant dinosaurs
Enemy attackLasersAcid
Arena hazardOil puddlesAcid left across the map
Developer pitchControlled reinforcementChaos, with power getting out of control

The enemy changes are not cosmetic. The developers say each path brings new visuals and new attack patterns, so your choice also decides what you dodge.

Based on those descriptions, Mecha should suit builds centered on weapons, and Mutation should suit builds that already lean on item effects. That is an expectation, not a tested result. Exact numbers, how Evolution is earned and what the thresholds are have not been published.

One open question: I have not seen anything on whether you can switch direction in the middle of a run.

The jungle map

The new map has 20 waves, including new elites and bosses, with new music alongside it. Base Brotato waves last between 20 and 90 seconds and a run is built to finish in under 30 minutes, so expect the jungle to fit the same short-run rhythm.

The map’s hazards depend on your Evolution path. Mecha runs bring lasers and oil, and Mutation runs bring acid. Boss and elite names have not been confirmed.

How to get it on launch day

  1. Own the base game. Steam states that the DLC requires Brotato on Steam. On other stores, buy the DLC where you own the base game.
  2. Open your store page on November 2. The launch time is not published, so check it directly.
  3. Do not rely on an early unlock. The DLC was reported to have briefly become purchasable at the announcement, which the developers described as an accidental early opening. The scheduled date stayed November 2.
  4. Console and mobile players, wait for early 2027. No store has a date to preorder against yet.
  5. Check your regional price. The reported figures are $3.99, €3.99 and £3.39.

Tips and common mistakes

Do not lock in a favorite build too early. The Evolution numbers are unpublished, so your first runs on launch day are the real test. Try both paths early before you commit your best items.

Treat it like a draft-your-build game. Evolution makes Brotato a decide-early game in the same way card picks do elsewhere. If you want a second build-driven roguelite to compare against, our Slay the Spire 2 cards guide covers the best cards by character.

Searching for the wrong name. Primal Dead appears in some coverage. The Steam title is Primal Dread.

Following the summer 2026 articles. Early reports gave a summer window. That window passed, and the date is now November 2.

Trusting a placeholder date. At least one release database lists December 31, 2026. It conflicts with the official November 2 date, so ignore it.

Expecting consoles soon. Early 2027 is the only window anyone has given.

DLC is landing across roguelites this month. Our Risk of Rain 2 Enforcer guide covers the Hallowed Concepts DLC survivor, which launched October 8. If you also play Once Human, the free Isles of Abyss expansion is scheduled for October 22, which is October 21 in Pacific time. More coverage is in our Gaming section.

What could change

Launch time, price, the console date and the roster can all change or be clarified before or after November 2. Everything here is accurate as of October 13, 2026, based on the announcements and outlets checked. Look at the official Steam page and the developers’ channels for final details.

Conclusion

Brotato: Primal Dread launches November 2 on PC, with a 20-wave jungle map and an Evolution stat that splits your run into Mecha or Mutation. Consoles and mobile follow in early 2027. Confirm the price and launch time on your store page, and expect the character and weapon names to arrive closer to launch.
