Roadhog Rework Explained

Roadhog rework explained in Overwatch, showing Scrap Gun changes, Trash Compactor, Chain Hook and Take A Breather updates, and new Roadhog perks.

Blizzard says it had two goals for Roadhog. First, it wants Chain Hook to feel less lethal on most heroes. Second, it wants Roadhog to help his team more like a traditional tank.

Scrap Gun changes

Primary fire now shoots 2 bursts per volley, so ammo rises from 6 to 12 and total damage per volley rises from 175 to 204. However, the critical multiplier drops from 2x to 1.5x, and the shotgun pellets drop from 25 to 16 with less damage each. To make up for that, Blizzard adds a larger center projectile that deals 34 damage. Spread also tightens from 8 to 6 degrees, while falloff range shortens to 20-35 meters. Meanwhile, projectile speed rises from 80 to 100 meters per second, and secondary fire is gone.

Trash Compactor

This new ability sits on secondary fire. When Roadhog activates it, he absorbs projectiles in front of him for 2 seconds. Then he fires an explosive projectile that deals 75 to 200 damage, depending on how much he absorbed. He converts 30% of the absorbed damage, but he also moves 15% slower while the ability runs. As for the cooldown, it is 10 seconds in 5v5 and 11 seconds in 6v6.

Tip: Save Trash Compactor for projectile-heavy fights, because the explosion scales with what you absorb. Otherwise, a quick tap against one weak shot wastes the cooldown.

Chain Hook and Take A Breather

The enemy stun after a pull drops from 0.4 to 0.3 seconds, but the target now lands 4.5 meters away instead of 3. In addition, Chain Hook’s cooldown drops by 1 second, from 7 to 6 in 5v5 and from 8 to 7 in 6v6. Take A Breather, on the other hand, lasts up to 2 seconds instead of 3 and heals 200 per second instead of 150. However, its damage reduction falls from 40% to 35%, and its cooldown rises from 1.25 to 2 seconds.

Roadhog perks

Scrap Hook now reloads 4 ammo instead of 2. Meanwhile, Shrapnel Launcher and Pulled Pork leave the game. In their place, Here, Piggy Piggy cuts Chain Hook’s cooldown by 80% during Whole Hog. Likewise, Toxic Exhaust slows enemies in front of Trash Compactor by 30% and deals 20 damage per second.

Sombra Rework Explained

Sombra Rework Explained infographic showing her shift from Damage to Support, with removed abilities, new tools, Translocator, Machine Pistol, EMP, and perk changes in a neon purple Overwatch-themed design.

Blizzard moves Sombra from Damage to Support, and from the Recon subrole to Tactician. The studio says her disruptive style never fit the value players expect from a Damage hero. As a result, Hack leaves her kit, and a new Weaken effect takes its place by halving a target’s own damage and healing instead of locking out abilities.

What leaves Sombra’s kit

Hack, Virus and Opportunist all leave her kit. In their place, she gets three new tools.

What arrives

  • Hotfix: it heals an ally for 65 health at once and 25 health per second, until it reaches 175 total healing or 12 seconds pass. It reaches 17 meters, holds 2 charges and has an 8 second cooldown. Also, Sombra can use it on health packs and most enemy deployables to hack them, and she can cast it while stealthed.
  • Cyberspace: it launches a projectile that creates a 5 meter zone for 3 seconds. While the zone lasts, it deals 25 damage per second to enemies, heals allies for 30 per second and weakens enemies by 50%.
  • Conspirator: this passive reveals enemies with fully charged ultimates, so she can see who threatens her team.

What changes

  • Translocator: stealth lasts 6.5 seconds instead of 5, but it takes 0.75 seconds to enter instead of 0.3. Range drops from 18 to 12.25 meters, while cooldown rises from 6 to 7.5 seconds. On the plus side, her speed bonus now starts right after teleporting.
  • Machine Pistol: damage per projectile drops from 8 to 7, and minimum falloff rises from 15 to 20 meters. At the same time, spread tightens slightly, and it takes 10 shots instead of 6 to reach max spread.
  • EMP: the ultimate costs 67.5% more, and it now removes 20% of current health instead of 25%.
  • Perks: Blizzard adds Life Hack, Data Packet and Cybersecurity. Also, it raises the experience cost of her minor and major perks.

Doctrine, Genji and Other Balance Changes

Doctrine nerfs

Blizzard says players liked Doctrine during the trial weekend, but he overperformed against other supports. As a result, his ultimate costs 8% more. Meanwhile, Invigorating Drones now gives 30% attack speed instead of 35%. Shrouded Momentum has a longer cooldown (8 seconds instead of 7), gives 40% damage reduction instead of 50%, and no longer makes him immune to critical hits. Deliverance, on the other hand, adds drone fire rate (4 to 5), but its overhealth and debuff last 6 seconds instead of 8. Finally, the Transfusion perk converts 50% less damage and healing.

Genji buffs

Swift Strike gains 10 damage to help him finish targets. In contrast, Dragonblade loses 10 damage to avoid awkward damage breakpoints, but it swings 15% faster. Overall, this looks like a buff, so expect Genji to feel stronger in dive comps.

Other hero changes

  • Ana: Local Anesthetic makes Sleep Dart explode on impact, so it slows enemies and deals 45 damage over 3 seconds.
  • Lúcio: Beat Drop now keeps Amp It Up active for 4 seconds after Sound Barrier. Also, Blizzard restores Sound Barrier’s longer duration because earlier changes hit it harder than intended.
  • Shion: Survival Instinct extends the overhealth from Evade by 1 second.
  • Cassidy: High Noon no longer works with Jetpack Cat’s Lifeline, which closes a strong repositioning combo.

Hitscan and Hit Volume Changes

Blizzard smooths out hit detection across the roster. Because that makes hits easier to land, it also shrinks hitscan projectiles. Large hitscan projectiles drop from 0.07 to 0.04 meters, while small ones drop from 0.04 to 0.02 meters.

In addition, the studio adjusts hit volumes for almost every hero. For example, Anran, Ashe, Illari and Venture get bigger torso or leg hit volumes, while Cassidy, Reinhardt and Zenyatta get smaller ones in several spots. Overall, Blizzard says the changes should make aiming more consistent without feeling very different.

Still, some players on the official forums already worry that the hitscan cut plus the Genji buff could favor dive heroes. However, Blizzard has not said that, so wait for real match data before drawing conclusions.

Game, Map and Mode Changes

  • Map voting: you can no longer see either of your last two maps within a 2 hour window. Also, Escort and Hybrid now count as the same mode when the game tries to offer two different modes.
  • Protects: tanks that use damage reduction or overhealth abilities now earn Protects more often when enemies target them.
  • Ping system: Blizzard removes the chat text from pinging enemy heroes, since it filled the chat too quickly.
  • Mystery Heroes: the 3 tank maximum returns.
  • Grímsvötn: the new Escort map arrives with the season.
  • Halloween maps: Hollywood, Lijiang Tower and Château Guillard get Halloween versions through November 3 in all queues.
  • Eichenwalde: Blizzard also fixes an old sightline through a door near the first chokepoint.

Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games

This limited-time 5v5 mode mixes Mystery Heroes, Junkenstein’s Lab and Stadium. Each team has a guaranteed 1-2-2 role setup, and matches run as a best-of-3 Control format. During a match, you pick from 3 random heroes within your role and level up as you play. Then, when you die, you earn Powers. Doctrine is playable in the mode too.

Competitive, Battle Pass and Chat Changes

  • Top 500 Challenger: the leaderboard now sorts by Rank instead of Challenger Score, and end-of-season titles use Rank. Blizzard also removes the Heat Bonus, while Challenger Score remains only as the requirement to make the top 500.
  • Unvaulted Battle Passes: open Battle Passes, then Legacy Pass to see old passes. You can buy Seasons 1 through 15 in the shop, but you can only have one unvaulted pass active at a time. However, rewards such as Mythic Skins, Mythic Prisms, Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts and Player Titles are no longer available there. In addition, the 2026 Season 4 pass arrives mid-season.
  • Custom Restricted Words: a new Social option under Text Chat hides messages that contain words you choose, and you can reveal them with one click.

Stadium Changes

Quick Play in Stadium now uses Open Queue with role limits of 1 tank, 2 damage and 3 supports, and a tank is required. Blizzard says this should shorten support queue times, although it calls the change experimental. In addition, passive health from currency drops by 50%.

Meanwhile, Blizzard weakens sustain builds:

  • Healing reduction: El-Saka Suppressor, Cybervenom, Sundering Vial and Siphon Snippet all rise to 40%. Also, El-Saka Suppressor now applies to all weapon damage, but it lasts 2 seconds instead of 3.
  • New item: Ultimate E.M.P. costs 9,000 and applies 100% healing reduction after you spend your ultimate charge.
  • Survival boosts: Divine Intervention shields rise to 75, and Nebula Conduit health rises to 75. In turn, Biolight Overflow leaves the game.

Notable Bug Fixes

Blizzard fixes reload speed reductions that stacked twice on Emre, Junkrat, Roadhog and Shion. Likewise, it fixes reductions that did not apply to Freja, Ramattra, Widowmaker and Zarya. The patch also fixes the bug that gave Mystery Heroes teams three tanks, along with several ping system issues. Finally, two Stadium problems get fixes, one with leaderboards and one with match XP.

How to Read Overwatch Patch Notes Without Getting Misled

  • Check the whole kit. Roadhog’s critical multiplier falls, but his total volley damage rises, so one nerf does not make the hero weaker.
  • Match the mode. Because Roadhog’s cooldowns differ between 5v5 and 6v6, read the right number.
  • Do not judge a rework by the numbers alone. Sombra’s new tools change how she plays, so wait for real matches.
  • Use the official page for updates. While the forum copy stays frozen, the official patch notes page will keep changing.
  • Be careful with win rate claims. Early posts often cite small samples.

What Could Change Next

Blizzard can adjust numbers with hotfixes and mid-season updates. Therefore, treat everything above as accurate only as of October 6, 2026. Meanwhile, check the official patch notes page for newer changes.

Conclusion

Season 5 is a big patch. Blizzard reworks Roadhog and Sombra, nerfs Doctrine, buffs several heroes and trims hitscan hit sizes. Beyond the balance work, the season adds Grímsvötn, a Halloween event and Unvaulted Battle Passes. So read the changes for your main hero first, and then check the official patch notes page for any updates after launch.
